Hands-On Science: The Digestive System in Action

By 8 October 2025No Comments

In Science, Year 4 learnt all about how the digestive system works – by becoming parts of it themselves! In small groups, the children started by mushing up banana and biscuits in a bag to represent how our teeth break up food.

They then added water to act as saliva, helping to form a bolus, just like our tongues do before we swallow. Next, the food travelled down the oesophagus into the stomach, where we added orange juice to represent our stomach acid. After everything was well mixed, the mixture was squeezed through tights to show how the large intestine absorbs water. Finally, once most of the liquid was removed, they cut a small hole to complete the journey and created their very own model “poo”!

It was a hands-on (and slightly messy) way to explore how our amazing digestive system works, and Year 4 loved every minute of it!
